The Castle was in a serious state of disrepair by the time renovation work began in late 1999. Most of the elegant curved turret windows had been broken out and boarded over. The roof leaked throughout the house, and the magnificent front porch had been replaced with a lean-to roof.

The back entry had been boarded to protect the kitchen from winter winds.

The outside corners of the entry foyer had been badly damaged by water, including major structural damage to the load-bearing wall and joists.
